with their children. police are on the ground missed the school searching room to room. connecticut state police have scheduled a news conference for 1:00 eastern. joining us on the phone, msnbc analyst and former fbi profiler clint van zandt. clint, give us your read, your assessment, on this situation? >> well, we know that the shooter is dead. we don't know whether that is by law enforcement action when the first responding officers went in and confronted him or whether, as we saw in the portland, oregon, mall shooting this past week, whether the shooter actually shot himself committing suicide. we know that at least two handguns were found. you know, that takes us back to april 2007 when the shooter at virginia tech, in that case, who killed 32 and wounded 15, also had two handguns. what it does suggest, though, is that this individual went in there with carrying two handguns and perhaps other ammunition. he went in there apparently to confront someone. we're told that confrontation took place in the office of the school and may have spilled out from there. we're still trying to understand the nu

-creator and author lynn winstead. we are just one week after the tragic shooting in connecticut, and the executive vice president of the nra has now broken his silence. he says it's the good guys against the bad guys, and everyone should have a gun. i disagree. if you look today at the speech that we showed just earlier here on msnbc, it's the first time since the newtown mass murder that the nra has spoken out in a speech that brought out the protesters. >> see there? several protesters interrupting. the nra did not focus on regulating semiautomatic weapons in this address, an address i think can only be described as combative. wayne la pierre attacked the press, the game and movie industry, and unnamed politicians for basically getting this story wrong, and he issued a range of criticisms. he staked out his organization's solution to this problem. ultimately as more guns. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. i call on congress today to act immediately to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation. >>

since the heartbreaking tragedy in newtown, connecticut. three days since we gathered as a nation to pray for the victims, and today a few more of the 20 small children and six educators who were taken from us will be laid to rest. we may never know all the reasons why this tragedy happened. we do know that every day ameri violence. we know such violence has terrible consequences for our society. and if there's even one thing that we can do to prevent any of these events, we have a deep obligation, all of us, to try. over these past five days, the discussion has reemerged as to what we might do, not only to deter mass shootings in the future, but to reduce the epidemic of gun violence that plagues this country every single day. and it's encouraging that people of all different backgrounds and beliefs and political persuasions have been willing to challenge and mold assumptions and change long-standing positions. that conversation has to continue. but this time the words need to lead to action. we know this is a complexed issue that stirs deeply held passions and political divides,

the tragedy in connecticut. there is less urgency for the passage of this sort of legislation. now, i understand that dianne feinstein is not introducing her bill until january, and there is a lot of stuff to move around. we obviously are dealing with this fiscal cliff negotiation, but you can't tell me that when biden comes up with his very reason -- platter of suggestions, and he is going to clearly be working with groups that have equity in this, that there is going to be as much urgency, that there's going to be as much emotion around this issue as there is right now. the question that i have for the white house, and they wrael weren't able to answer it in the press conference yesterday, is why not move? even if it's symbolically more quickly on any one of these issues. >> that's an interesting point to bring up, sam, and as the national editor at "the times" dana mill bank points out in an op ed yesterday -- he writes "the experience of the press conference showed -- the president's press conference yesterday -- showed how difficult it will be to keep the focus on this issue and
